Was wir tun

Become a Better Listener. Your Family Will Thank You. (Published 2020)

Effective communication skills are more important than ever in our close-quarters existence. On a recent morning, my family was assembled in our customary positions at the kitchen table: my husband, Tom, and I hunched over our computers, while our daughter, wearing headphones, did math problems for remote learning.

44 Empathy Statements That Will Make You a Great Listener

If you ever watched the iconic show Inside the Actor's Studio, with James Lipton, you know all too well one of the notorious questions he asked during each interview: "What's your favorite word?" I used to wonder what my answer would be to this question if I were ever interviewed on his show.

How to Guide People Without Giving Advice

Giving advice to others gives us a sense of control and status, which may make us feel good but usually isn't all that helpful to the other person. Instead of giving advice, we can guide people to find their own answers through a combination of listening and asking questions.

Why we should all stop saying "I know exactly how you feel"

A good friend of mine lost her dad some years back. I found her sitting alone outside our workplace, just staring at the horizon. She was absolutely distraught, and I didn't know what to say to her. It's so easy to say the wrong thing to someone who is grieving and vulnerable.

💡
