📚 Description of coursework
The course is designed to engage selected management students with an entrepreneurial mindset and equip them with basic knowledge about quantum and semiconductor technologies and to enhance their understanding of its applications in various industries.
Participants will delve into the basics of both technology fields in a dual-track format (Quantum and Semiconductor) and explore their business applications through interactive sessions featuring industry experts and physics researchers. The Quantum track builds an understanding of what quantum technologies enable and how they reshape value creation in sectors such as cybersecurity and pharma. The Semiconductor track complements this foundation by introducing the semiconductor ecosystem as a key enabling industry for deep tech ventures and as a geopolitical priority for industrial competitiveness. Overlaps between both fields are highlighted explicitly, for example through the Munich-based startup Quantum Diamonds, whose applications connect quantum sensing with semiconductor-related contexts. This foundational knowledge will prepare students for a subsequent course they can apply for called "Quantum Entrepreneurship Laboratory", a plugin module where selected management students form interdisciplinary teams together with physics students. Together, they will tackle real-world challenges and develop startup ideas, creating a dynamic environment for entrepreneurial growth and innovation.
🎯 Learning outcomes
Students who have attended this seminar will have
- A basic understanding of key concepts in the fields of quantum and semiconductor technology
- Knowledge of the key challenges integrating these deep tech technologies for startups, as well as promising approaches and methods to address these challenges
- An understanding of the connections between both fields, for example semiconductor technology as a key enabling industry for quantum and other deep tech ventures
And have acquired skills related to
- The application of quantum and semiconductor technology to solve business use cases
- Critical thinking, reflection and application of concepts and scientific findings to concrete challenges
- Preparing and delivering a startup pitch
📖 Teaching methods
In the course of the seminar, students will receive input on the topics covered in various thematic blocks, as well as working materials for self-study and review. Subsequently, the contents are deepened in the seminar in the context of exercises, role plays, reflections, presentations and discussions.
As part of the examination, the participants will work on a specific use case applying quantum or semiconductor technology to solve industry-specific issues and prepare this didactically so that all other course participants can also benefit from it. At the end of the seminar they will have the opportunity to present and discuss this topic in front of the other students and a jury that will award the best student group with a prize. Based on this, the students will have a solid understanding of how to apply quantum and semiconductor technology to solve business use cases.
