đź’ˇ Background
Systems Engineering coordinates technical disciplines and decisions across the life cycle of complex systems. Generative AI can help analyse requirements, explain models, identify inconsistencies, generate alternatives, and prepare reviews. The larger question is how AI changes engineering roles, methods, decision rights, competencies, and accountability—and which decisions must remain with people.
🦾Who We Are
3DSE Management Consultants is a specialized management consultancy focused on product and service development. We help industrial companies make their development organizations more effective by improving strategy, processes, structures, and collaboration. Our work combines rigorous methods with a strong focus on people and behavior to turn complex challenges into measurable results.
The Chair for Strategy and Organization is focused on research with impact. This means we do not want to repeat old ideas and base our research solely on the research people did 10 years ago. Instead, we currently research topics that will shape the future. Topics such as Agile Organisations and Digital Disruption, Blockchain Technology, Creativity and Innovation, Digital Transformation and Business Model Innovation, Diversity, Education: Education Technology and Performance Management, HRTech, Leadership, and Teams.. We are always early in noticing trends, technologies, strategies, and organisations that shape the future, which has its ups and downs.
🎯 Goals
Develop an empirically grounded Target Operating Model for AI-enabled Systems Engineering.
Research question:Â Which Systems Engineering activities can be automated or augmented by Generative AI, and where must human judgment and accountability remain central?
🎓 Profile
Suitable for students in systems or industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, information systems, or a related field. Applicants should understand product development or Systems Engineering and be interested in organizational design and human–AI collaboration. Strong analytical and conceptual skills, plus familiarity with qualitative research, are desirable.

âž• Additional Information
The thesis will classify Systems Engineering activities by their potential for automation, AI augmentation, human–AI collaboration, or human-led decisions. Criteria may include standardizability, context dependency, criticality, explainability, and accountability. Expert interviews, workshops, or case studies can validate the resulting process, role, competency, governance, and implementation recommendations.
