Netflix

📈 Diagnostic

🏅Achievements

  • Operational carbon neutrality
  • Procure 100% of its energy from renewable sources

📊 Performance

Even though Netflix disclosed its environmental data for the first time in 2020, it reduced its carbon footprint. However, this was due to delayed content productions during the COVID-19 pandemic and not actions aimed at reducing emissions. Netflix does not disclose its environmental impact regarding other resources.

🧭  Strategy

Netflix has a three-step strategy called NetZero + Nature to tackle its environmental footprint with the goals being focused on the comapnies CO2e emissions.

Strategic step
Description
1. Reduce
Reduce its internal emissions by approximately 45% by 2030
2. Retain
Retaining existing carbon storage in at-risk natural ecosystems (e.g., by protecting rainforests)
4. Remove
incorporate investments in the regeneration of critical natural ecosystems, such as mangroves, grasslands, and others

🎯Goals & Actions

2022 - Carbon Neutrality across whole supply chain

Mainly focus on carbon compensation by:

  • Investing in projects that prevent carbon from entering the atmosphere, starting with conserving at-risk natural areas like tropical forests by the end of 2021
  • Incorporating investments in the regeneration of critical natural ecosystems in order to achieve net zero.

2030 - Reduce 45% of emissions

Three step process:

  1. Optimize – focus first on achieving operational efficiencies Hire local crew to avoid travel and lodging Provide employee commuting options Install content delivery caches close to members, reducing traffic on transmission networks
  2. Electrify – transition away from fossil-fuel energy sources where possible and replace them with electric power, or zero-emissions fuel sources. Install additional power at stages and use clean and silent mobile battery units, reducing the need for diesel generators. Install EV charging stations at offices
  3. Decarbonize – buy 100% renewable and additional electricity where possible, or renewable fuels where electrification proved infeasible Install on site solar panels Encourage data centers and other partners to continue decarbonizing their energy supply
