RESEARCH INTERESTS
I am part of an international research team examining the functioning of virtual teams. In the context of the online strategy simulation game Travian, we study how teams manage to be successful in a virtual environment. This environment faces them with challenges such as global dispersion, diversity and the need to mainly use information and communication technology in order to interact with each other. My research focuses on the network structure of virtual teams. I am interested in how networks within virtual teams and the network of cooperating and competing virtual teams affect the development of teams and outcomes like individual or team performance. The goal of my research is to provide insights in effective team structures and what influences them both positively and negatively. What makes it even more interesting is the internationality of the study. We are blessed to have a great cooperation with Travian Games that allows us to conduct surveys for our study in 23 countries. This, however, faces us with the challenge of handling gigabytes of data, but data crunching is fun!
PROJECT SUMMARY
Collaboration and cooperation are essential to innovation and knowledge creation, and virtual teams are a valuable tool for such collaborations. Characteristic features of virtual teams, such as the dispersion and diversity of team members and the reliance on information and communication technology rather than direct interaction, are advantageous but also pose challenges. The purpose of this project is to examine what enables teams to best meet these challenges. We use the concept of trust as an organizing principle for understanding how technostructural and social-psychological factors affect the behavior in virtual teams. See more...
